Ethiopia: Rare Mursi wooden lip plate (Southwest Ethiopia)
to increase beauty and the bride price - used object
A rare original piece of jewelry for the lips of Mursi-Women. As you can see on the pictures, the disk shows traces of use. Young Mursi-Women make an incision under the lower lip with a razor blade in order to wear this clay disk. They first insert a wooden peg or small clay disk into the aperture steadily increasing its size. Respect and bride price are said to grow with the size of the disk in lips and ears. Today the primitive people of the Mursi comprises with its brother tribe the Gurma approximately 30 000 persons.
